Mini Racing Series Round 3 at Wakefield Park Jim driving
Wakefield Park turned on a brilliant spring day for the final round of the MRA series.
Jim came into the round sitting 2nd in the outright sedan class and 1st in treaded over 2 litre class.
No mention of this was made on the day as the last time a trophy was mentioned at a race meet Jim got tapped at turn 2 and missed out!
Qualifying was very busy with about 30 cars running around at various speeds.
Jim struggled to get heat into the tyres and find some space to have a run.
A disappointing 1:10.858 was still good enough for 2nd on the grid.
Race 1 saw Jim get a brilliant launch but the 200sx roared up to take first by turn 2.
The sports sedan torana also looked like squeezing past but the datto had just enough grunt to beat him to turn 3.
From there Jim sat in behind the 200sx, which was running a couple of seconds slower than his normal pace, trying to apply enough pressure to force a mistake.
No such luck though with the 200sx finishing 1st with Jim in the datto 2nd.
Race 2 and the 200sx got a much better start than last time so Jim had to be content with tucking in behind.
Even though the positions didn't change it was still a great race with Jim in 2nd and the Torana in 3rd ready to pounce on any mistakes.
Race 3 (trophy race) the 10 lap race started out the same as the previous race had finished with the top 3, 200sx, datto, and torana, all close together.
Unfortunately the Torana damaaged a rim so it was just Jim and Greg (200sx) out in front.
Even though the 200sx looked like his tyres were starting to fade he still had plenty of pace to win a convincing 3rd time and take home the top trophy.
Jim was happy to take 2nd and clinch 2nd outright and 1st in over 2 litre treaded class in the championship.
Mixed race. The final race of the day was a combined grid of minis and sedans.
There was nothing at stake apart from the fun of racing but everyone was still going 10/10ths.
The Torana sports sedan was lucky to be moved up from 6th to 4th on the grid making for an interesting challenge for Jim who'd only just managed to hold him out in race 1 and 2.
Even though Jim set a new PB of 1:09.1376 it wasn't enough to catch the Torana and he only just managed to pass a mini on the last lap to claim 4th.
An excellent race and great fun!
Thanks to Dave Youl of MY Racing from coming down and giving Jim a hand.

NSW State Championship - Round 5 at Oran Park Grand Prix Jim driving
Wakefield isn't Jim's favourite track but after just breaking into the 1:09s at the last MRA round he was hoping to get there more consistently.
Qualifying started well with new brakes pads all round making the datto much happier to brake later and harder.
Jim qualified 10th on the combined grid (over and under 2 litre cars) with a new personal best lap time of 1:09.5003.
Very happy with that, especially compared with qualifying 16th in the overs at the last round at Oran Park.
Jim is starting to like Wakefield Park more....
Race 1 on Saturday afternoon started well with Geoff Fear's GTR launching off into the distance.
After a couple of laps Jim was 11th but closing on the two V8s in front.
Jim had worked his way passed the commodore and the XY Falcon and was up to 9th on lap 10 when disaster struck.
Having just completed the quickest lap of his race of 1:09.7491 the car started coughing at full throttle like it was out of fuel.
Jim eased off hoping to maintain some sort of position until the end of the race (he wasn't sure how many laps to go) but the problem got worse.
Fearing that he was going to damage the engine he had no choice but to pull out of the race.
Sunday morning saw a shiny new fuel filter installed in the datto and a quick test in the car park indicated that all was well.
Starting from 26th (rear of grid) the datto got a great start off the line and was tucked in behind Dave Youl's Corona heading up the hill for the first time.
By lap 3 Jim was in 12th but that's where the plan of finishing in the top 10 went off the rails.
An RX7 ran off the track on the exit of turn 2 and as he came back on the track (about 5 cars on front of the datto) he ripped a hole in his drop tank.
Fuel poured out over turns 3,4, and 5 just as Jim was closing on Peter Street in his Evo.
At turn 5 Jim made a choice that, if he'd had the time to weigh up the pros and cons he wouldn't have made, ended badly.
Peter Street ran wide on turn 5 to avoid the fuel spilt on the track and Jim took the chance to dive underneath him.
The grip wasn't too bad but the datto was a little slow and a bit out of shape heading down the hill.
Unfortunately Peter, being a wiser and more experienced driver, got a much better run out of the corner but was unable to avoid contact with the datto.
Yet another tap in the right rear corner saw the datto spin out of the corner.
Jim got it together reasonably quickly and only dropped 3 positions.
With the datto still running fine and no rubbing noises Jim settled back into it and worked his up to 9th!
Once again the plan for a top 10 finish came apart when Jim succumbed to the pressure of trying to keep in front of Jacky Yick's Honda when he gave it too much right foot coming out of the "fish hook".
Ending up in the dirt again, he dropped down to 15th before getting back on track.
With the last lap board out he only just had enough time to beat the Mirage to make it back to 14th place.
Race 3 had the datto gridded up right behind MY Racing's Corona.
Dave made the Corona seem about 3 cars wide as he expertly positioned his car on the track, keeping Jim from finding a way through.
Unfortunately, Dave's Corona wasn't running well so he finally succumbed to the power of the mighty datto on the back straight and Jim started moving forward.
Jim had had a good talk to himself and was committed to making sure he kept it on the black stuff and kept clear of any more contact.
The plan worked with Jim moving up to 10th (unfortunately Choppo's red commodore was too quick and Jim couldn't keep him out).
Jim spent the last few laps behind Ahmed's white commodore but Jim couldn't find a way past and stayed there to the chequered flag to finish 10th.
The other distraction as Jim was trying to get past the commodore was that the engine time had started to climb and the warning lights were on.
In the cool down lap the engine water temp spiked to 122 degrees celcius so it may be that the weekend didn't end so well after all.
Hopefully Stewart Wilkin's workshop won't reveal too much bad news....
A totally awesome weekend of racing!
Looking forward to the final round of the MRA series at Wakefield Park in September to try to get into the 1:08s....

NSW State Championship - Round 4 at Oran Park Grand Prix Jim driving
Jim finally makes it to a state championship round!
Qualifying was slow with the track feeling very slippery.
Jim thought maybe there was a setup problem with the datto but everyone else was complaining about the same thing and noone was putting in great times.
A qualifying time of 1:23.2071 was good enough for 16th out of 27 but pretty disappointing.
Race 1 on Saturday saw Jim make a good launch on the start only to have a wall of rx7s block him from making full use of it.
The best laptime Jim put down wasn't any improvement with oil making parts of the track very tricky.
Finishing 13th was a move in the right direction.
Race 2 was on Sunday morning with a light rain just before the race making the track even splipperier than race 1.
Jim didn't get the good launch like race 1 with wheel spin in 1st and then 2nd gear.
Trying to stop the wheel spin by grabbing 3rd gear the wheels found traction but the engine bogged down.
There's nothing so annoying as watching the cars in front drive away from you...
The race got more interesting with Jim dicing with a Torana and then an rx7.
Jim finally won out over both of them to finish where he started in 13th with a laptime of 1:26.2739
Before the trophy race the heavens opened again complete with lightening, thunder, and hail.
You have to feel sorry for the open cockpit formula V cars that were out racing when it all came down....
After a long delay waiting for the rain to stop the 3rd race was shortened to 5 laps and just the south circuit as the bottom of the grand prix circuit was deep under water.
Just for something different we had 2 warm up laps before gridding up.
The start was the slowest ever but at least Jim kept traction and maintained a reasonable position.
The GTR and Audis loved their advantage with Geoff Fear's GTR moving up to first.
Meanwhile Jim was sliding around trying to keep up with the cars in front and hold out the cars behind.
Sam Maio's FWD TX3 was all over the back of the datto in the corners however passing in corners was near impossible.
Unfortunately for Sam, he was down on power so was unable to pass on the straight so ended up being stuck behind.
Jim finished 14th with a laptime of 1:05.6608 on the south circuit.

Mini Racing Series - Round 2 at Wakefield Park Jim driving
Practice on Sunday morning started slowly with a very cold track and quite a few cars taking it easy.
Just as the tyres were starting to get warm the session is red flagged!
We all line up in pit lane and our tyres go cold again (they weren't really warm anyway) while they drag the car off the circuit.
Back out again and we only have time for one flying lap with warm(ish) tyres before it's all over.
Jim starts race 1 in 5th.
Race 1 is 5 laps and the tyres on the datto feel stone cold after the slow out lap.
Jim had a reasonable start but was slow across the top of the hill and got passed by a commodore sports sedan.
He then spent most of the race trying to catch the commodore again only to be passed by a super quick GTR that came up from mid field.
For some reason the commodore dropped off the pace after the GTR passed him and Jim managed to pass him without difficulty.
Finished 6th although the result had to be counted back as we actually raced for 6 laps instead of 5.
Race 2 was 5 laps (and actually finished on the 5th lap!).
Jim had an ok start but the RB26 powered 200sx and V8 commodore got passed him without too much trouble.
He did finally get passed the Triumph and also caught and passed the Steve Jagger Corolla on the first lap.
The Datto's grip was a little better as the track was warmer and Jim had dropped the pressure in the front tyres.
Still didn't manage to get below 1:10 though...
Finished 5th.
Race 3 was supposed to be 8 laps but got cut to 6 without warning.
Jim made a mess of the start and was 3 places back in no time.
He quickly caught back one spot by going past the Torana sports sedan.
He then went past the Triumph going up the hill which only left Steve Jagger's Corolla to get back to where he was.
Catching up to the Corolla didn't take too long but passing him was a lot more trouble than in race 2.
As Jim pushed he found that the rear brakes were locking early.
By the time he'd wound some brake bias to the front the Corolla had put some distance between them.
Thinking that he still had two laps to go, Jim was planning to settle into a couple of quick laps to try to have another go at passing Steve.
To his surprise the checkered flag came out on lap 6 so he never got the chance!
The good news was that he finally went quicker than 1:10 with a new PB of 1:09.846.

Day/Night Oran Park South Jim driving
After the trouble with the car at Wakefield Park it was time to try to improve the car.
Armed with new front brakes, an LSD, and a rear sway bar we were hoping that the car's "difficult" handling and understeering might be improved.
A 51.1049 in qualifying saw Jim into grid position 12 out of 22. Not a brilliant start but the tyres were pretty ordinary so not unexpected.
Three new tyres (not need for the front left to be new as it dowsn't do much at OPS) got Jim to position 5 in race 1 with at PB of 49.9987.
The 2nd daylight race looked to be going pretty much the same way until Graeme Shae had a sping at turn 1 of the final lap letting Jim through to 4th with a PB of 49.5346.
Race 3 was the first race in the dark. Jim started 4th but lost a couple of positions quickly.
Jim had a car close behind for a few laps but it was hard to keep track of as it only had one head light.
As Jim turned into Suttons corner he noticed a yellow flag then realised there was a car facing the wrong way on the exit of the corner.
The Datto is hard enough to get around that corner but with the rx7 sitting on the exit line of the corner there was no chance to miss it.
Trying to brake and turn in meant the back of the car broke traction and the driver's side of the car smacked into the front of the rx7.
The race was red flagged and Jim limped back to the pits.
The nice, new tyre was punctured and the driver's rear door was smashed.
Folded metal meant that the wheel arch was rubbing on the tyre.
Luckily there were a number of people ready to lend a hand including Scott "Thor" Fleming, Pete Harmston, Shane Fowler, Marty, and a number of other people who leant tools and support.
Jim tried to run in race 4 but the tyre rubbed too badly so he pulled off rather than risk a tyre blowout.
More hammering by Scott Fleming meant that the datto was almost as good as new.
Race 5 saw Jim start from rear of grid with an old right rear tyre.
After moving up quickly Jim diced with a falcon and Peter Street in his Evo.
Jim got past the Evo but the Falcon kept out braking Jim into turn 1.
Ultimately Jim finished just behind the falcon for 7th place.

Mini Racing Series at Wakefield Park Jim driving
Practice on Sunday morning started well with the newly resurfaced track proving to be much more predictable and smooth especially the braking area for turn 10.
In qualifying the new jumpstart battery paid for itself as the Datto wouldn't start! Qualifying went well with the datto ending up 2nd behind an RB26 powered 200SX and in front of an HSV commodore GTS.
The only concern from qualifying was that as the day warmed up (it was getting hot!) the gearbox was getting more difficult to select 3rd.
Race 1 featured some ordinary driving from Jim. The 200SX blasted away (about 3 seconds a lap quicker) and Jim managed to keep in front of the HSV Commodore to finish second.
In Race 2 the 200SX decided to start from rear of grid (probably got bored being so far in front) so Jim started on pole.
With more gearbox selection problems the Commodore got past as did the 200SX so Jim ended up third.
Race 3, the "trophy" race saw Jim 2nd on the grid again with the 200SX choosing to start from rear of grid again.
In spite of driving hard the struggle with the gearbox proved too much and Jim finished the race in 3rd again behind the 200SX and HSV.
The 4th race was a mix of the quickest minis and sedans.
Jim started from the 2nd row (4th) for the first time that day with a mini in front of him and a mini beside him.
Not that these were any "normal" sort of minis with their big rear wings, slicks, flares, and one with a Honda VTEC engine.
As before the 200sx (this time from the front of the grid) left everything else behind. The mini on the front row filled the gap between Jim and the 200SX and the 2nd row mini followed Jim closely.
With his big wing, light weight, and slicks the mini was close in the tight stuff but fell behind when the datto could open up on the straights.
The mini made a dive and got in front on the last corner of the last lap but Jim saw it coming and crossed behind in the corner then opened up to beat him across the line. Good fun!

Festival of Sporting Cars at Wakefield Park Jim driving
As there were no points or championship to contend for Jim decided to do a bit of testing as part of the Festival of Sporting Cars race meeting.
The front springs were softened from 650 pound to 450 pounds (that's a large change) in an attempt to improve the Datto's understeering around the tight Wakefield Park circuit.
The morning's practice session started well with a new personal best for Jim of 1:10.7029 (drop of 0.4 seconds). That was good enough for 9th quickest. The strange thing was the car felt horrible!
By the time Race 1 came around the track was hot (aka turbo unfriendly). Jim finished 8th with a best lap time of 1:11.0695 (still not too bad for the conditions) but was disappointed not to hold onto 5th.
The brakes had felt spongy and needed pumping between corners to work so between races Jim bled the front brakes to try to get some better feel.
Race 2 saw Jim do a couple of high 1:10 laps before the race was red flagged on the 4th lap. We all raced off to top up the fuel before restarting. The second attempt at race 2 wasn't quite as good with Jim finishing 9th with a best lap time of 1:10.6565.
The reason for the spongy brakes became apparent as the rear pads were just metal on the left side. There were hundreds of spare front pads in the kit but no rears so it was off to SuperCheap Auto first thing in the morning.
Sunday morning started hot and just got hotter all day. Race 3 was a 7 lap race but Jim didn't drive as well finishing 9th with a best laptime of 1:11.2454. The rear pads weren't really up to racing and had a nasty tendency of locking up.
Race 4 was another hot 7 laps with Jim finishing 9th again.
Race 5 was 6 laps but finally saw Jim return to some good form with a best lap time of 1:10.4450 to finish 8th in front of Graeme Shae's Capella that he'd been chasing all weekend.
There's some interesting in car video in the video section from this race meet as well as some photos taken by Dave Youl of MY racing.

Round 6 of the NSW State Championship at Eastern Creek Jim driving
Following PB Motorsport's tradition of trying to be as cheap as possible Jim qualified with the tyres that he'd used for practice the previous day, the same ones that Pete had (ab)used at the previous two rounds that Jim had originally used at Round 4.
The vibration from the left rear's flat spot wasn't too bad unless the car was turning right. Lucky there's not too many right handed corners at EC....
Jim qualified 18th out of 24 with 1:52.41. Better than the practice day times but still pretty ordinary.
There was only a shadow of tread pattern so Jim decided to let some moths out and put some new tyres on the front for the first race.
This helped with braking and entering the corners but the rear tyres (one still with a flat spot) couldn't cope resulting in some interesting corner exits.
Jim finished 17th with a best lap time of 1:52.0755. Here's hoping that the new rear tyres (ready for racing tomorrow) can help move us up the rankings...
Sunday morning's race saw Jim move up to 12th with some close racing with Phil Page (rx7) and Peter Bellett (Audi).
The oil spill during the 4th lap from Geoff Fear's front diff in turns 6-7 made life very interesting. Jim got close to his best time with 1:50.42.
The trophy race (race 3) started with a bang - literally.
From the in-car video it appears that Peter Foote's RX7 and John McKenzie's Commodore come together resulting in the two spinning across the track and general mayhem for all those following.
The Datsun got tagged by the spinning Commodore resulting in the driver's door and back door being damaged.
Phil Page's RX7 was the worst off as he plowed straight into the commodore and destroying the front of his car.
Everyone was ok (although Phil will be sore for a while).
The restart saw the grid down 3 cars (John Boston's GTR had problems before the restart).
The 5 lap race was incident free with Jim finishing 10th with a best lap of 1:50.8332.

Festival of Sporting Cars at Oran Park Gran Prix Pete driving
Pete picked up the Datto on Friday morning after the "tap" from Jim's previous round had been repaired to find that the car wouldn't start.
It turned out that the panel beaters had started the car a couple of times to move it around the workshop and this had been enough to foul the plugs.
Once Pete had a new set of plugs in he was on his way until he got caught in a traffic jam on the M7.
Ultimately he got half a day's worth of practice in and although he was consistent the times were off the pace of what we'd done at Oran Park before.
The Festival of Sporting Cars (FOSC) have a different format to the State Championship rounds with a practice/qualifying session, and two races on Saturday followed by another three races on Sunday.
On Saturday Pete qualified 13th with a best lap that was still a couple of seconds off his best.
Race 1 saw Pete moving up 3 positions to finish 10th after mixing it up with Dave LaMaitre and Dave Crighton.
Race 2 had Pete finish 9th but still the Datto seemed to be off its game with relatively slow lap times.
Sunday saw the clouds moving in although the rain held off for the first two races.
Race 1 had Pete finishing 9th again and again in Race 2.
The third race on Sunday was run on a wet track with some drivers struggling to adjust to the conditions.
Two drivers spun off the track on the warm up lap. When the lights went out Pete got off the mark well only to find that the car in front was sitting still spinning its rear tyres.
Pete had to brake and by the time he was going again he'd dropped well down the order.
Conceding that the Datto wasn't really in its element in the wet Pete decided to relax and enjoy the drive.
He found that a couple of other cars that are competitive in the dry were struggling in the wet.
Although they were racing down the order there was plenty of skill on display as Pete went side by side with a V8 commodore around half the track. They even had synchronised drifts!
At the end of the race Pete finished 12th but the position didn't reflect how much fun was had on the track!
Dave Youl of MY Racing in his Corona found the wet conditions to be much more to his liking and he moved up to finish 9th just behind the RX7 of Peter Foote. Well done Dave!

Round 2 of the MRA Championship at Wakefield Park Jim driving
Pete generously allowed Jim to take this round after the Oran Park round had been cancelled.
After staying at the farm next door to Wakefield Park we woke up to a thick crust of ice on the car and thick fog in the air.
The 7:30am scrutineering was always going to be ambitious but it didn't matter in the end as the track didn't open until an hour after scheduled.
Combined sedans were the first to go out for qualifying. The fog was still thick enough that we had to run with our headlights on!
Jim qualified with 1:11.438 which was good enough to put him on pole position! The only problem was that the sylvia that qualified second obviously had potential to do better.
Race 1 and the sylvia was quicker off the mark than Jim in the datto but went in too hot and dropped two positiona with a detour through the dirt.
By the 3rd lap the sylvia had the grunt to blast past Jim. The next two laps saw the sylvia disappear away into the distance and Jim finish second with a new PB of 1:10.435.
Race 2 had the sylvia get away, Jim slot in behind, and the torana of Jeff Nielsen close in for third.
Race 3 (trophy race) was reduced to 5 laps from 8 after a big rollover accident in an earlier mini race.
Jim tried a different tactic off the line, running wide to try and cut back to give the sylvia a run. Unfortunately a Triumph Dolomite came in deep under brakes on a shallow line and tapped the back of the datto.
The datto was spun around and run off track (giving Dave of MY Racing an interesting view) and rejoined the race at the back of the pack.
Jim worked his way back through the pack but run out of laps before catching up with the quick boys. He finished 7th behind Dave Youl of MY Racing.

Round 3 of the NSW State Championship at Oran Park Jim driving
Friday's practice day was very challenging as the track was very wet and slippery.
Unlike the Eastern Creek round where the practice day was wet but the race days were dry the forecast was for even worse conditions during racing.
Jim was very grateful to Dave Youl of MY Racing for organising the carports as it was pretty bleak for those brave souls who were trying to stay dry under portable gazebos.
The best laptime from Friday was over 15 seconds slower than a dry track time but even more concerning was how difficult it was positioning the car on the track.
Having the Datto wag its tail around corners in practice wasn't so bad but in a race with other cars all around?
On Saturday the drivers briefing was delayed from 8:30am to 10:00am due to the bad weather.
Parts of the track were under water and the heavy rain squalls coming through meant that the conditions weren't getting any better.
At 11:00am the race organisers called off the meeting due to the weather.
A big thank you to the MY Racing team for assisting in packing our stuff back up.
They'd wisely left their car on the trailer.

Round 2 of the NSW State Championship at Eastern Creek Pete driving
Pete jumped back into the driver's seat for what seemed to be the first time in ages.
Pete had never raced at Eastern Creek so he decided to hit the track on the Friday to get his eye in.
As it turned out Friday was nothing like the rest of the weekend with torrential rain spoiling any chance of a quick lap.
Pete will never forget to check the bonnet pins but that's another story....
On Saturday morning during qualifying a number of cars self destructed leaving oil all over the track.
The combined grid of under and over 2 litre cars meant that the track was busy and a clean run difficult to come by.
The quickest qualifiers put down their quickest laps as the 1st or 2nd lap before the oil and everyone was 2-3 seconds slower after that.
Pete qualified 20th out of 31 cars.
Race 1 saw 3 DNFs out of 28 cars and Pete move up to 16th place finishing just in front of the MyRacing Corona piloted by Dave Youl.
Sunday races
Race 2 had Pete pull his finger out (some tweaks of tyre pressures, etc. helped too) to finish 11th.
The tyres went off towards the end of the race otherwise Pete would have finished in front of Pagey (previous owner of the mighty Datto)
Race 3, the trophy race, Pete finished with one of the best results for PB Motorsport to date.
Driving an intelligent race to conserve the tyres over the 12 laps saw Pete finish 8th overall and 7th in over 2 litres.
Congratulations to Geoff Fear of SSS Automotive in the GTR for his first trophy race win!
Next round will be Jim's first race at Oran Park!

Round 1 of the NSW State Championship at Wakefield Park Jim driving
The weekend of the 14th-15th of April saw the PB Motorsport team hit the track for first time in 2007.
As the Datsun 1600 had minimal setup time after some serious rebuilding the main goal of the weekend was consistency and finishing races.
Jim was the driver for the weekend however Wakefield Park isn't his favourite track so he knew he was going to have his work cut out for him.
Qualifying on Saturday morning with the older 205/60 tyres saw Jim achieve a respectible position 12 out of 16.
Race 1 on Saturday afternoon after switching to 205/50 tyres and bleeding the front brakes, with the assistance of Tim Button and crew, saw Jim finish 10th out of 14 finishers with a new personal best of 1:10.9155.
Race 2 on Sunday morning didn't go as well as a hose came loose resulting in no turbo boost after the 2nd lap.
This slowed the datto by around 3 seconds a lap and dropped Jim from 10th to last although he was still able to finish.
Race 3 on Sunday afternoon started from the rear of the grid but involved some of the most enjoyable racing we've had since the start of last season.
The datto tussled with the 6 litre Torana of Peter Sayers for most of the race ending up 2 car lengths behind for 9th place.
Overall a good result for the team (compared to last year). Bring on the next round!
